These prints combine etching with pencil drawing to respond to pivotal moments in the war to defend Ukraine against Russia's brutal invasion. We Are Still Here is based on the defiant selfie shot by President Zelenskyy and his cabinet in the streets of Kyiv shortly after the 2022 invasion, a moment in which they famously rejected offers of safe haven to remain with their people. D-Day Heroes depicts the emotional embrace between Zelenskyy and a 99-year-old WWII veteran during the 80th anniversary commemorations of D-Day in France, a meeting during which both men insisted the other was the true hero. These works are informed by Hawrysio’s own heritage; her family fled Ukraine for Canada in 1912, and her reconnection in the late 80s with relatives in the “old country” has made the current conflict particularly hard to bear.
