401 West and East

1979 / 2018  ·  Etching / photo etching / silkscreen / photograph

In 1979, Hawrysio affixed two etching plates on the road surface of Highway 401 outside Kingston, Ontario, and allowed cars and trucks to pass over them at speed. Concurrent is a double etching on a single piece of rag paper made from the two plates placed on the west- and east-bound lanes of the highway. West and East is a pair of photographic etchings with images of the finished prints fixed to the highway signs. In 2018, Denise added a graduated colour onto the original prints using silkscreen, to produce 401 West and East.
